Polk Audio T50 Review: Is This Budget Tower Still Worth Buying?

The Polk T50 was a hugely popular budget tower. Here is what it offers, how it is built, and what to buy instead now that Polk has moved on to the Monitor XT range.

The Polk Audio T50 was one of the best-selling budget tower speakers of the last decade. It offered a genuine floorstanding speaker — tall cabinet, bass you can feel, a proper dome tweeter — at a price closer to many bookshelf speakers. Thousands of people built their first stereo or home theater around a pair.

Polk has since moved its entry-level line on to the Monitor XT series, so the T50 is now an older model that you are more likely to find used, refurbished or as remaining stock. This review explains what the T50 is (and isn’t), what to check if you buy one today, and which current speakers we would look at instead.

How we researched this: This guide is based on manufacturer specifications, owner documentation, published third-party measurements and professional reviews. We have not hands-on tested these speakers unless a section says so. Our methodology

What the Polk T50 is

An earlier version of this page described the T50 as a complete home theater package. That was inaccurate: the T50 is a single floorstanding speaker, sold individually. Polk sold it alongside matching T-series models — the T15 bookshelf speaker and T30 center channel — so buyers could assemble a full surround system, but each was a separate purchase.

The T50’s design is simple and effective for the money:

  • Two-way design with a 1-inch dome tweeter for treble and a single 6.5-inch woofer handling bass and midrange.
  • Two 6.5-inch passive radiators. These are unpowered cones that move with the air pressure inside the cabinet, extending bass output without a port. Because there is no port to “chuff”, passive radiators are usually forgiving of placement near a wall.
  • Slim, light cabinet with a black wood-grain vinyl finish, intended to be easy to place and easy to drive with an entry-level AV receiver.

Is it still worth buying in 2026?

The T50 is an older model and Polk’s current entry-level towers are the Monitor XT series. Availability of new T50s varies, so treat any listing as remaining stock, refurbished or used. If you find a pair, check:

  • Woofer and radiator surrounds — gently press around the cone edge; it should move smoothly with no scraping, tears or crumbling foam.
  • Tweeter domes — dents and pushed-in domes are common on speakers that lived without grilles.
  • Binding posts — make sure they tighten properly and aren’t cracked.
  • Price — a used T50 only makes sense if it costs clearly less than a new Monitor XT60, which comes with a warranty.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Genuine tower speaker at a budget price — a big step up from small TV or Bluetooth speakers.
  • Passive-radiator design is easy to place near walls.
  • Slim and light, so easy to move and position.
  • Part of a matching series, which made it easy to build a surround system.

Cons

  • Older model — new stock is limited and there is no current warranty on used units.
  • One active woofer limits how loud and deep it can go; large rooms and action movies benefit from a subwoofer.
  • Basic vinyl finish.
  • Sold individually — budget for two.

Who the Polk T50 suits

The T50 makes most sense for a small to medium room, a first stereo or a budget 2.0/5.1 system powered by an entry-level AV receiver. If your room is large or you want room-shaking movie bass, plan on adding a subwoofer — see do tower speakers need a subwoofer?

Current alternatives to the Polk T50

Earlier versions of this article compared the T50 with the Polk R30 and a Sharper Image Bluetooth tower. Both are long gone, so here are current options built on the same “affordable, easy to drive” idea. The Monitor XT60 is the most direct modern equivalent — it even keeps the one-woofer-plus-two-passive-radiators layout.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Polk T50 sold as a pair?

No. The T50 was sold individually, so you need two for stereo. The same applies to its modern replacement, the Monitor XT60 — always check whether a listing is for one speaker or a pair.

Does the Polk T50 need a subwoofer?

Not for casual music in a small or medium room — the passive radiators give it reasonable bass. For movies, gaming or larger rooms, a subwoofer takes the deepest bass off the single woofer and makes the whole system sound cleaner at higher volume.

What amplifier works with the Polk T50?

Almost any modern entry-level AV receiver or stereo amplifier is a practical match. Check that the amplifier is comfortable with the speaker’s impedance and avoid running it into audible distortion. Our amplifier compatibility checker walks through the basics.

What replaced the Polk T50?

Polk’s current entry-level floorstanders are the Monitor XT models. The Monitor XT60 is the closest equivalent in size and design, and the Monitor XT70 is a larger step up with two woofers.

Verdict

The Polk T50 earned its popularity by making tower-speaker sound affordable. Today it is a sensible used buy at the right price, but most shoppers buying new should look at the Polk Monitor XT60 or step up to the Monitor XT70 for more bass.
