Floor Standing Speakers vs. Bookshelf

Are you undecided on whether you should get a floor standing speaker or a bookshelf type? There are a lot of people that would say either is the best.

Personally, I do believe that there is a definite answer to the question since there are a lot of different models and units that have their own pros and cons. You are going to have to factor in a lot of things on your own if you want to make sure that you know the better one at the end of the day.

With a bookshelf speaker, you have a small form that can be mounted on a stand or placed on a bookshelf. These types of speakers are usually two-way or three-way depending on the design of the brand that you choose to go with. You are going to get a tweeter and small mid bass drivers with the package.

They have a limited, low-end bass output because of their smaller size, so you are going to have to work out a way to get around this if you are someone that wants to play loud bass with your music especially with the hip hop and EDM genres.

Floor-Standing speakers, also known as tower speakers, are the larger types that are stood on the ground. You do not need to set it up on a bookshelf and you do not have to get a pair of speaker stands.

You typically have multiple drivers with the design that are included in the dedicated bass driver, midrange and tweeter set. You will have a better, in fact louder, bass on the songs that you play with floor standing speakers due to their size when you compare them to bookshelf types.

You also have to keep in mind that there are subwoofer and satellite systems for your audio setups. You have a small bookshelf sized speaker that handles the mids and the highs of the different subwoofers that are hooked into it, while handling the bass frequencies through a different system.

This type of platform will get you a satellite speaker type of processing that has an array of drivers which are used to output the SPL as well as match the subwoofers to make sure that you deliver both low and loud bass regardless of your speaker size.

If you are thinking of getting either, you have to keep in mind the following questions and answer them before you even consider picking a brand:

  • How much am I willing to spend on the speaker set?
  • Am I going to use the speaker system for my home theater setup, or do I just want a dedicated two channel system without the need for a sub?
  • Am I looking to get the crispest and cleanest sound quality, or do I prefer something that just plays loud with a lot of bass to something that emphasizes the mids and highs of the audio?
  • Am I going to be able to do a lot of tweaking with the speakers depending on the occasion, and what I am going to use them for?
  • Will I be able to fit the tower in my room, or do I have to find a bookshelf to place the speakers on?

If you take note of these questions, then you will be able to decide which one to get at the store. You have to make sure that you are answering these questions truthfully so you will be able to decide without hesitation which one you are going to get. This will also help you in making sure that your setup will suit you.
